Questions from Programmers

What databases does Superior SQL Builder support?

Currently Superior SQL Builder generates SQL scripts for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access and MySQL. Superior SQL Builder can be easily extended to cater for additional Database Servers.

You mention that your visual tool is different because it is 'soft coded' - what do you mean by that?

Script generation is performed by our unique "Script Templates" which have complete control over the way a script is generated. Superior SQL Builder users can easily create new Script Templates, or modify existing ones. In this way, there are no "hard coded" or pre-determined script generating components. This provides users with high degrees of flexibility.

I have used "Template style" products in the past and have always had to post-edit the output script. Will I need to do this with Superior SQL Builder?

No. With Superior SQL Builder no post-editing is required. The power and flexibility of Superior SQL Builder's "soft-coded" Script Templates allow them to be configured to generate the script you need. You can even embed your own hand-written script amongst the generated script, which is saved with the Project. This ensures that obtaining the output script is a single step, single click operation.

I am proficient in SQL. Why would I use Superior SQL Builder?

Proficiency is not the issue. Generally, highly proficient SQL programmers still love to use Superior SQL Builder because it removes much of the drudgery of typing in and debugging scripts, leaving them to focus on the more important aspects of what they are doing. They are able to focus on getting the design right, rather than spending hours entering SQL statements. They love it because script writing becomes a fun experience, rather than a boring, time consuming, error prone one.

Can I build other types of scripts (other than SQL)?

Yes. You can build any type of text based script, including SQL, XML, HTML, Unix, Perl and Java scripts. You can create your own Script Templates that generate the type of script you want.

Can I Save the Projects that I create?

Yes, this is possible when you have a registered version of Superior SQL Builder. The Free Trial version does not allow users to save projects, libraries or scripts.
A project encapsulates an entire solution to a problem. Therefore entire SQL scripts may be generated for multiple databases from the one project in a single step.

Can I use Superior SQL Builder programmatically?

Yes. All Project, Library and Script Generation operations can be carried out via non-user-interface programmatic calls to the document object model. The object model is available to Microsoft.NET Framework managed code.

Red Earth Technologies has a number of Software Development kits available. Please contact us for details.

Can I alter the scripts that are generated by the Script Templates?

Yes. You have complete control over the output scripts generated by the Script Template. There are two ways to control the output generated by Script Templates:
  • Designing the Script Template. A Script Template can be designed to generate any script you want.
  • Using the Script Template. A Script Template can be designed to respond to data entered by a user to alter its script generating behaviour.

Can I build my own Script Templates?

Yes. Superior SQL Builder gives the user complete control over the creation of Script Templates. This includes the specification of the number of Inputs and Outputs; the data types of the Inputs and Outputs; the Script Template's customisable Properties; and how this is all tied together and create the output script you need. There are also a number of advanced features that can be taken advantage of.

How extendable is Superior SQL Builder?

Superior SQL Builder is highly extendable. Users are able to:

  • Build their own Script Templates . This is done through the Superior SQL Builder user interface.
  • Build their own data types . Each Input, Output or Property has a data type. Many Database-centric data types are provided with Superior SQL Builder such as Database Tables, OLE DB Connections, Field Lists, strings, and more. Software development kits are available from Red Earth Technologies to extend these data types, such as catering for more Database Servers; or to create your own new data types.
  • Call the Superior SQL Builder object model programmatically. This allows Superior SQL Builder to be used within your own applications. Software development kits are available.

Questions from Managers

What sort of time savings can I expect to make?

Time savings will increase according to the length and complexity of the task. Typically our customers complete tasks in 25% of the time that they would have previously taken.

How long does the Free Trial last?

The Free Trial lasts 21 days. During this period we provide free email support.
Upon purchasing Superior SQL Builder, you will also receive a 30 day money back guarantee.

I want to transfer the bulk of our SQL work to our junior developers. How can Superior SQL Builder let me do this?

Script Templates encapsulate much of the "SQL knowledge" normally required by a developer to complete SQL scripting tasks. More senior developers are able to develop Script Templates that encapsulate their knowledge in a generic way. A junior developer can then deploy Script Templates into their project via drag-n-drop operations. The simple, consistent user interface then allows the junior developer to configure Script Templates to solve the problem at hand.

How can Superior SQL Builder help me achieve code consistency across my development team?

Different developers by nature write code differently, with different standards and style. This can lead to difficulties when one developer takes over the work of another.
When a single set of Script Templates is provided to all developers in the team, all SQL script generated will have the same standard and style. This means the most junior developer can generate SQL script of the same quality as their senior team members.
Since scripts are defined graphically and at a functional level, a developer is able to quickly take over and understand the work performed previously by another developer, regardless of either developer's SQL ability.
